Platelet-Rich Fibrin | PRF | Dental Healing

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a biological material derived from a patient's own blood that contains a high concentration of platelets and growth factors. It is commonly used in many disciplines of medicine and surgery (think skin rejuvenation, hair regrowth, chronic pain, to name a few). It is used specifically in oral surgery to promote faster and more effective healing following procedures such as tooth extractions, bone grafting, and implant placement.

The process of making PRF begins with the collection of a small amount of your blood, usually from the arm. The blood is then placed into a centrifuge, which spins the sample at a high speed to separate the various components. This results in the separation of the blood into three layers: red blood cells at the bottom, a white blood cell and PRF layer in the middle, and platelet-poor plasma at the top.

The middle layer, which contains the PRF, is carefully removed and can be used immediately in the surgical site. PRF can be used in different forms, including as a membrane, plug or liquid. When applied to the surgical site, PRF releases growth factors that stimulate cell proliferation and enhance the body's natural healing processes, leading to faster and more complete tissue regeneration.

The use of PRF in oral surgery has been shown to improve wound healing, reduce post-operative pain and swelling, and enhance bone regeneration. It is also considered to be a safe and cost-effective alternative to other types of bone and tissue regenerative materials.

At Elite Oral and Facial Surgery, we offer complimentary PRF with every bone grafting procedure, since we believe in its powerful healing capabilities. Since we have seen the incredible results our patients have with it, we don’t want you to have anything less.
